Busiest US port says June imports rebound after China tariffs reduced

LOS ANGELES -Imports to the busiest U.S. seaport in Los Angeles rebounded strongly in June, finishing up 10% versus a year ago and contributing to record total volume for the month, the port’s executive director said on Monday.

The Port of Los Angeles handled 470,450 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of incoming cargo last month after the U.S. reached a tariff truce with China.

The surge “highlights the tariff whipsaw effect” from U.S. tariff policy, said Gene Seroka, the port’s executive director.

Seroka said retailers’ push to bring in goods before the vital holidays is underway. He expects robust imports for July before an easing off in August, when new tariffs could be in place.
